For most of the last decade, the MDR question was settled. If you didn’t have the headcount to staff a 24/7 SOC — and most organizations didn’t — you outsourced investigation and response to a provider who could. The model worked within known constraints, and the alternatives were limited: hire a team you couldn’t afford, or try to duct-tape SOAR playbooks across an ever-expanding alert surface.
That calculus is shifting. Agentic AI SOC platforms can now perform the investigative work that made MDR necessary. Not triage, not enrichment, but the actual analytical reasoning that turns an alert into a determination. For teams approaching an MDR contract renewal, that creates a genuine decision point that didn’t exist two years ago.
This piece is about what happens if you take that path. Having spent years as an analyst talking to customers about their difficult relationships with MDR providers, I want to be straightforward about what the transition involves: what you gain, what you give up, and where the work actually lives.
Good MDRs deliver real value. The best ones build customer context over time, maintain strong detection libraries, run established escalation workflows, and staff experienced analysts who develop genuine familiarity with your environment. If you’ve worked with a strong provider, you’ve built muscle memory around how escalations arrive, how your team responds, and how the MDR fits into your incident response process.
The reason teams move away comes down to structural constraints in the model around the economics and scope.

Custom detections don’t scale within the MDR model. MDRs run their own detection libraries or standard vendor rules across their entire customer base. That’s how they achieve unit economics. If your team has built custom Sigma rules, custom SIEM queries, or environment-specific detection logic — and most maturing programs have — those alerts route back to your internal team because the MDR can’t justify building bespoke investigation workflows for each customer’s custom content. As your detection engineering practice grows, the share of your alert volume that falls outside the MDR’s scope grows with it.
Deep investigation on every alert isn’t economically viable at scale. Good MDRs document reasoning on high-severity investigations. But the model is built to move fast across a large customer base, which means lower-severity and lower-confidence alerts get lighter treatment: enrichment, a quick determination, and an escalation. That’s a rational allocation of human attention. It also means a meaningful share of your alert volume gets a cursory look rather than investigated, and when your team needs to act on a thin escalation, the investigation effectively restarts internally.
Organizational context has a ceiling in an outsourced model. Even the best MDR analysts who develop real familiarity with your environment are working across multiple customers. They won’t know that engineering is testing a new VPN this month, that a specific service account behaves in ways that look anomalous but are expected, or that the CEO’s travel schedule explains an impossible-travel alert. Some of that context can be documented and shared, but there’s always a gap and that gap shows up as false positive escalations your team has to resolve.
These are structural tradeoffs of a model designed for breadth.
It’s worth being direct about what you lose, because these are things your team needs to account for in the migration plan.
You lose an external team of human analysts who’ve been in your escalation workflow, sometimes for years. You lose an established response cadence your team has built habits around. You lose the MDR’s detection library, which may have been covering categories your team hasn’t built detections for internally. And you lose a vendor relationship that, at its best, included threat intelligence sharing and strategic input on your detection posture.
The AI SOC platform covers investigation and response capacity. But the detection coverage, the workflow habits, and the institutional knowledge your team built around the MDR require deliberate work to replace.
The transition works best as a gradual expansion of AI SOC coverage, with the MDR still in place during the early stages. Each phase builds on the validation from the one before it and each phase involves real work from your team.
The natural entry point is the alert types already falling to your internal team — custom detections, alerts from tools outside the MDR’s integration scope, and low-severity categories the MDR filters or auto-escalates without investigation.
Routing these to the AI SOC platform first is low-risk because it doesn’t touch existing MDR coverage. But this phase is more than connecting integrations. Your team needs to onboard core data sources — SIEM, EDR, identity provider, cloud security tools — and verify the platform is pulling from the right sources with the right permissions. You’ll configure initial guidance: environmental context, known exceptions, business logic the platform needs to investigate accurately. And you’ll establish a review cadence: how often analysts review the AI’s completed investigations, what “good” looks like, and how feedback gets incorporated.
This is also where you’ll hit the first friction. Some integrations take longer than expected. Some alert types need tuning before the AI handles them cleanly. The platform’s initial investigations on your custom detections may need a few cycles of analyst feedback before the output meets your team’s standard. That’s expected, and it’s why this phase gets two months.
Once investigation quality is validated on the initial set, migration moves to the categories the MDR currently covers — identity alerts (impossible travel, MFA fatigue, anomalous logins), phishing triage, and endpoint detections. These are high-volume, well-understood, and straightforward to benchmark.
Running the same alerts through both the MDR and the AI SOC platform during this phase produces the comparison data that matters: investigation depth, accuracy, time-to-determination, and whether the evidence trail is complete enough for your team to verify without rebuilding the work. Most teams establish a threshold — reviewing a statistically meaningful sample of investigations across each alert type and confirming the AI’s determination aligns with what a senior analyst would conclude.
This is also where you’ll discover the alert types that need more work. Maybe identity alerts are handled well out of the gate but cloud security alerts need more environmental context to investigate accurately. Maybe certain edge cases in your phishing workflow require additional guidance. The side-by-side period exists precisely to surface these gaps while you still have the MDR as a backstop.
Change management starts to matter in this phase. Your analysts’ daily workflow is shifting — less time on MDR escalations, more time reviewing AI investigations. That transition benefits from being deliberate: defining what the review workflow looks like, setting expectations on how analysts provide feedback, and beginning to carve out time for hunting and detection work that the freed capacity makes possible.
By this stage, the AI SOC platform is handling the bulk of alert volume, accuracy is validated across the categories that matter, and the MDR’s remaining coverage footprint is small. The final phase is migrating any remaining alert types, confirming end-to-end coverage, and coordinating the MDR contract wind-down.
Two things tend to surface here. First, detection coverage: if your MDR was running detections that your team hasn’t replicated in your SIEM, you need to close that gap before the contract ends. You also need to keep in mind that, from this point forward, the responsibility to maintain detection coverage is your hands. You need to put a process in place to continuously assess and update your detections.
Second, incident response integration: making sure the AI SOC platform is plugged into your escalation and remediation workflows — ticketing, notification, and response actions — the way the MDR was.
What teams often find at this point is that the scope of what’s being investigated has expanded well beyond what the MDR was covering. Every alert — high-fidelity, low-fidelity, custom, vendor-generated — is getting a complete investigation. Coverage gaps that existed under the MDR close as a byproduct of the migration, not as a separate project.
When an investigation is running at machine speed across 100% of alerts, the analyst’s day looks different. The work shifts from waiting on MDR escalations and backfilling context to reviewing completed investigations, verifying edge cases, and spending real time on threat hunting, detection engineering, and complex incident response.
This shift requires deliberate planning. Teams that restructure workflows around it — defining review cadences, carving out dedicated hunting time, using the AI’s investigation output to identify detection tuning opportunities — get materially more out of the migration than teams that swap tools and keep the old operating rhythm.
One pattern worth calling out: junior analysts often use the AI’s investigation methodology as a learning framework. They see how a thorough investigation is structured: what questions get asked, what data sources get queried, how evidence gets weighed against context. The transparency of the investigation trail turns the platform into a training mechanism alongside its operational function. That’s particularly valuable for smaller teams where formal analyst development programs aren’t realistic.
The MDR-to-AI-SOC migration has a cost dimension, but teams that build the case solely around cost savings tend to stall internally. The more complete version rests on three pillars.
Speed. Investigations that took 30–60 minutes under the MDR model — or longer when the team had to reconstruct context from a thin escalation — complete in minutes. That compression shows up directly in mean time to respond.
Coverage. Under most MDR arrangements, a meaningful share of alerts never get fully investigated — custom detections, low-severity alerts, alerts from tools outside the MDR’s scope. An AI SOC platform that investigates every alert closes that gap without adding headcount.
Capability addition. With investigation capacity decoupled from analyst availability, the team can sustain work that wasn’t happening before — continuous threat hunting, ongoing detection tuning, proactive coverage gap analysis. Security posture improves even if team size stays flat.
The teams that move fastest on this decision tend to frame it around what they gain in coverage and capability, not just what they save in spend.
The MDR model works within its design parameters, and for many teams it was the right call when they made it. What’s changed is that investigation capacity is no longer bound by human headcount and that changes the math on what’s worth keeping in-house versus outsourcing.
