AI security is the work of keeping an organization safe now that AI sits on both sides of the fight. In 2026, Claude Mythos became the first AI model to complete a full corporate network takeover on its own. OpenAI's own models caused the Hugging Face breach. And OpenAI's Astra model became the first model rated Critical for cyber capability.

As a result, security leaders now use the term "AI security" to mean at least three different things. For some teams, it means securing their own AI use and the agents they deploy, the way CASB and CNAPP secured the move to cloud. For others, it means defending against attacks that move at machine speed. A third group uses it to mean applying AI to security work itself, in the SOC, in vulnerability management, and in exposure management.

The Three Categories of AI Security

AI security covers three distinct categories: AI for security, which uses AI to run security work; security for AI, which protects an organization's own AI models, agents, and data; and security from AI attacks, which defends against threats that AI makes faster or more convincing.
