MDR has been a dense, crowded category for years, and most of the guides meant to help buyers navigate it are indistinguishable from each other. The vendors below are the ones most commonly shortlisted in enterprise MDR cycles, selected based on analyst coverage from Gartner and Forrester, peer review volume, and the deals Prophet teams see in competitive evaluations. The profiles draw on publicly available positioning and documented customer feedback rather than proprietary testing, and each one examines how the provider handles the operational questions that matter at renewal — which alerts get full investigations, which get enrichment and a handoff, how custom content is treated, and what shows up in the ticket when an incident lands back on your team’s plate.
Most of the variation between MDR providers shows up at the alert level, not the marketing level. A few dimensions do most of the work in separating one offering from another, and most of them are hard to see until you’re already under contract.
What counts as “investigated.” Every MDR will tell you they investigate alerts. The operational question is what that word covers. For some providers, investigation means running an alert through a tuned filtering pipeline, adding threat intel enrichment, and routing the result to either auto-close or customer escalation. For others, it means an analyst pulls query results from your SIEM, cross-references endpoint telemetry, walks the authentication chain, and writes a conclusion with evidence. The gap between those two definitions is enormous, and it’s rarely made explicit on a pricing page.
The middle of the severity distribution. Critical alerts get hands-on treatment from almost every MDR that stays in business. Informational alerts get bulk-closed by almost every MDR that stays in business. The interesting question is what happens to medium-priority alerts, which make up the bulk of volume and occasionally hide the early-stage indicators of a real intrusion. This is where providers diverge most, and where the per-alert economics of the delivery model are most visible.
Custom detection treatment. If your detection engineering team writes its own rules — correlation logic, Sigma content, behavioral detections built on top of your data lake, whatever your program has built — how does the MDR handle alerts those rules generate? Some providers investigate them with the same process as vendor-supplied detections. Most treat them as out-of-scope and forward them back to you. This gap widens as a detection program matures and custom content grows as a share of total volume.
The artifact you get back. When an alert comes back to your team, what does it look like? A severity label and a link to the raw event? A short summary paragraph? A documented investigation showing what was queried, what came back, and how the reasoning moved from evidence to conclusion? The answer shapes how much re-investigation your team does after each escalation, which is a real and recurring operational cost.
Who can take action and when. Containment authority varies widely. Some providers isolate hosts, revoke sessions, and reset credentials unilaterally on confirmed threats. Others require explicit customer approval for every containment step. The difference matters most at 3 AM during an active intrusion, which is also when it’s least likely to be tested during evaluation.
Most of these dimensions don’t have a clean vendor-level answer because they’re properties of the human analyst delivery model itself. The throughput math of a shared pool — one team of analysts serving many customer environments — bounds investigation depth, context depth, and custom content handling in ways that aren’t fixable by switching providers within the category. The best MDRs operate efficiently within those constraints. None of them eliminate them.

On the constraint side, that knowledge lives inside the provider’s walls. If the relationship ends, the context resets to zero — the next provider, or your internal team, starts cold.
At the alert level, customers have consistently reported two patterns worth flagging during evaluation. First, direct analyst access to raw SIEM data for independent verification tends to be limited; when your team wants to validate an escalation by running the same queries, the workflow isn’t always frictionless. Second, detections your team authored in your SIEM often route differently than detections that originated in Aurora’s own content library. Teams with mature detection engineering programs should test this explicitly during a proof of concept.
Arctic Wolf is strongest in mid-market environments where the trade of operational control for turnkey coverage makes sense, and where a dedicated named team fills a gap internal staff can’t cover.
Expel built its practice around a transparent delivery model that puts customers inside the same investigation workbench its analysts use. The Ruxie AI engine handles automated enrichment and early-stage evidence assembly, but analysts make the calls on verdicts and escalations. Expel’s integration footprint is deep in the Microsoft ecosystem, and the company has extended into managed SIEM services for Splunk and Sentinel.
The transparency is real and it matters. When an Expel analyst escalates an alert, your team can open the investigation and see the exact sequence of queries, pivots, and evidence artifacts that led to the conclusion. That removes the most common source of friction in MDR relationships, which is guessing whether an escalation was handled the way you would have handled it.
The structural limit is the delivery model itself. Expel is a human-analyst-first MDR, which means two things at the alert level. One, the depth of investigation per alert is bounded by analyst capacity, which is bounded by headcount and queue volume across the full customer base. Two, alerts that require deep internal environmental context — a correlation that depends on understanding a nonstandard CI/CD pipeline, for example — can still route back to your team with partial investigation and a request for additional context. Expel’s detection engineering team does build custom content on behalf of customers, which narrows the custom detection gap compared to peers but doesn’t close it entirely.
Expel works well for security teams that want to watch their MDR work and occasionally argue with a verdict in the same platform where it was rendered. It fits especially well for Microsoft-heavy stacks.
eSentire’s Atlas XDR platform anchors an MDR offering built around fast containment. The service is pitched as “response-forward” — the provider takes action on confirmed threats rather than returning a recommendation for the customer to execute. The 2026 Atlas Agents release added AI-driven investigation agents that work alongside human analysts, with humans retaining authority over escalations and containment decisions.
Response authority is eSentire’s clearest differentiator in the MDR space. For customers who sign the containment authorization, the provider will isolate hosts, revoke sessions, and terminate user tokens without waiting for customer approval on each action. That changes the economics of a 3 AM alert in a meaningful way. The Threat Response Unit also produces original intelligence and contributes detection content back into the platform, which shows up in the quality of what actually gets alerted on.
The caveats are tier-specific. Investigation depth, custom detection coverage, and response authority all vary by package. A customer on a lower-tier plan gets a substantively different service than a customer on Atlas Complete, and the published tier matrix doesn’t always make the investigation-level implications obvious. The agentic AI capabilities are genuinely new, which means their impact on per-alert investigation quality is still working through the customer base; results from design partners don’t necessarily translate directly to broader customer experience yet.
eSentire fits teams that have made a deliberate call to delegate response authority to the provider, particularly in industries where containment speed is tied to compliance obligations.
Red Canary operates as a Zscaler company following the August 2025 acquisition, though the unit continues to run semi-independently with its existing integration footprint across third-party security tools. Zscaler has signaled intent to fold Red Canary’s agentic capabilities into its Data Fabric for Security over time, which will reshape the product roadmap in ways that aren’t yet fully defined.
On the MDR fundamentals, Red Canary continues to stand out on alert content quality. The detection repository — built over a decade of confirmed threat research across a large and varied customer base — feeds into both the detections Red Canary runs and the analyst intuition that drives investigations. That quality shows up downstream: when a Red Canary escalation lands in your queue, it’s less likely to be a false positive than escalations from some peer providers. The detection-as-code practice is well-regarded by detection engineers who care about how their provider’s content is versioned, tested, and deployed.
The Zscaler acquisition is the most important thing to understand at evaluation right now. Red Canary historically partnered across endpoint vendors, including a managed XSIAM relationship with Palo Alto Networks. How those partnerships evolve under a parent company that competes directly with several of them is the open question. Zscaler’s investment should accelerate the AI roadmap and platform unification — which is a real upside — while creating uncertainty about long-term integration priorities outside the Zscaler ecosystem. Teams running heterogeneous stacks should ask for explicit written commitments on non-Zscaler integration continuity rather than accepting verbal reassurance.
Red Canary fits teams that weigh alert quality above operational breadth, and the combined platform story is strongest for organizations already inside Zscaler’s perimeter.
ReliaQuest’s GreyMatter platform sits above a customer’s existing tool stack as an operations layer, connecting to SIEM, EDR, cloud, and identity sources rather than replacing them. The 2026 iteration leans heavily on role-based agentic personas — “Teammates” in ReliaQuest’s language — that automate work traditionally assigned to entry and mid-tier analysts. Forrester placed GreyMatter in its Q1 2026 Proactive Security Platforms Landscape, reflecting the platform’s positioning beyond pure MDR.
The MDR-relevant question is what the Teammates model does at the alert level. For straightforward cases — commodity phishing, benign impossible travel, standard endpoint alerts — the automation handles investigation and closure without human touch. For more ambiguous cases, work is routed between the AI agents and the human analyst pool ReliaQuest maintains behind the platform. Escalations to the customer arrive with investigation notes and recommended actions rather than raw alerts, which removes some re-investigation work on your side.
Two things to weigh during evaluation. First, the platform’s ambition extends well beyond investigation and response — attack surface management, digital risk protection, phishing analytics, threat hunting, and exercise simulation all sit in the same footprint — and paying for that breadth makes sense only if you plan to use meaningful portions of it. Teams shopping specifically for investigation capacity often find the total contract value disproportionate to that narrower need. Second, contract pricing reportedly sits above the MDR mid-market median, which filters the profile toward larger enterprises.

Falcon Complete is CrowdStrike’s managed layer on the Falcon platform, now marketed under the “Agentic MDR” label following the 2026 addition of AI agents into the analyst workflow. CrowdStrike received Customers’ Choice recognition in the 2026 Gartner Peer Insights Voice of the Customer report for MDR.
The strength of the offering is the vertical integration with Falcon itself. Analysts working Falcon Complete tickets are operating inside a platform they know extremely well, with direct access to endpoint telemetry, response capabilities, and threat intelligence produced by the same vendor. Response times on endpoint-originated alerts are correspondingly fast, and the containment workflow — network isolation, process termination, file quarantine — executes without the integration friction that cross-vendor SOAR orchestration introduces.
The scope is the structural constraint. As a managed service, Falcon Complete is architected around alerts CrowdStrike generates. The Falcon Next-Gen SIEM evolution extends visibility into third-party data sources, but the investigation-and-response machinery that defines the managed service remains most mature for the native Falcon stack. Alerts from your external SIEM, third-party DLP, cloud providers outside Falcon’s cloud workload protection, or identity providers Falcon doesn’t ingest are typically outside the core scope — which means your team still carries triage responsibility for those surfaces.
Falcon Complete makes sense when CrowdStrike is the strategic endpoint decision and the team has a plan for the alert sources outside Falcon’s native coverage.
Sophos closed its acquisition of Secureworks in February 2025, combining two significant MDR practices into what is now the largest pure-play MDR footprint in the market — over 28,000 MDR customer organizations post-integration. The combined offering runs on the Taegis XDR platform inherited from Secureworks, with Sophos’ X-Ops threat intelligence and Counter Threat Unit research feeding the detection and investigation workflow.
Taegis was built as a vendor-neutral platform, and that orientation has survived the acquisition. The platform natively ingests telemetry from CrowdStrike, Microsoft Defender, SentinelOne, Carbon Black, and Sophos Endpoint, which is meaningful for customers who want MDR coverage without being forced onto a single endpoint vendor. The Counter Threat Unit has a long track record on state-sponsored threat research that shows up in the content Taegis alerts on.
At the MDR delivery level, two things are worth testing during evaluation. First, the Sophos-Secureworks integration is real work that isn’t finished. Customers in the combined portfolio are navigating two product lineages converging at different speeds across different features; which capabilities live on Taegis versus Sophos Central versus a unified future platform is worth getting clarified in writing before signing. Second, the offering’s strengths lean toward threat intelligence breadth and coverage scale rather than per-alert investigation evidence. Teams whose renewal driver is investigation depth — specifically, the quality of the artifact that comes back on an escalation — should compare Sophos output directly against peers during a proof of concept rather than relying on brand reputation.
Sophos MDR fits organizations that value scale, vendor-neutrality across endpoints, and strong threat intelligence, with integration state as a near-term operational consideration.
MDR and AI SOC address the same underlying problem — investigation and response capacity — through structurally different delivery models. MDR delivers capacity through outsourced human analysts working a shared queue across many customers. AI SOC platforms deliver capacity as software running inside a single customer’s environment. The economic curves, scaling properties, and operational trade-offs diverge substantially.
The reason AI SOC platforms increasingly show up on MDR shortlists at renewal is specific: several of the structural ceilings described in the framework above — analyst throughput under volume, custom detection coverage, per-escalation evidence depth — are architectural properties of the shared-pool model rather than execution problems that change with a better provider. The questions that separate providers aren’t the ones asked during the sales cycle — they’re the ones that can only be answered from a year of operational data. Five are worth putting in writing before the next contract term starts.
Ask what share of alerts received a full documented investigation in the previous year, as opposed to filtering, enrichment, and escalation. Most buyers sign a contract with an implicit assumption about this number and never measure it. The answer is a meaningful leading indicator of what the renewal term will look like.
Ask how your custom detections fared. If the provider investigated fewer than half of them, the custom detection gap has been present the whole time and will persist through the next term unless something structurally changes.
Ask about the escalation-to-incident latency for the genuine incidents that landed during the year. This is the MTTR that matters, not the one published in marketing materials. Latency on real incidents tends to look different from the average time-to-triage the provider reports.
Ask how many different analysts have worked your account in the past 12 months and what the turnover rate looks like. Context loss at analyst handoff is a consistent source of friction and a leading indicator of escalation quality degradation.
Ask what you own at contract end. Detection content, investigation history, tuning work — the answer matters much more than most buyers realize until they’re trying to migrate.
MDR exists because 24/7 SOC staffing is operationally and economically out of reach for most organizations, and outsourcing investigation capacity to a provider with a shared analyst pool is a legitimate answer to that constraint. Across a broad swath of the market, it remains the right answer. The category isn’t in decline; it’s maturing.
What’s changed is that the structural ceilings of the model — the ones that flow from the economics of shared human analyst capacity — are now more visible, and buyers who’ve been in long-running MDR relationships increasingly recognize them. Detection programs have matured. Custom content has grown. The gap between “we investigated it” and “we investigated it the way our team would have” is no longer theoretical.
For teams where those ceilings have become the binding constraint on SOC performance, the AI SOC model is worth a formal evaluation rather than a sidebar conversation. The transition doesn’t mean abandoning MDR tomorrow. Most programs that change their model run the two in parallel for a defined period, starting with the alert categories where the capacity gap is widest.
